CAC Partners with ITC on Innovative Cashew Byproduct Research Projects

Phnom Penh, January 1, 2026 — The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) has received three research collaboration proposals from specialists at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), one of the country’s leading scientific research institutions, aimed at promoting innovation and sustainability in the cashew sector.

The first proposed project focuses on the study of wood vinegar produced from cashew tree branches trimmed during routine orchard maintenance. Wood vinegar is a key ingredient in the production of organic pest repellents and supports the cashew sector’s “Zero Waste” initiative, which seeks to help farmers maximize the value of all cashew-related byproducts. As an organic input, wood vinegar has the potential to significantly reduce overall production costs for farmers. This project is scheduled to begin in mid-2026 and will be implemented in the provinces of Tboung Khmum, Kratie, and Kampong Thom.

The second project addresses the underutilization of cashew apples, which are typically discarded despite their abundance. For every ton of raw cashew nuts harvested, approximately five tons of cashew fruit are produced. While cashew apple juice can be processed into sugar, vinegar, or Feni Goah, a strong liquor, this research will specifically explore its conversion into foliar, organic liquid fertilizer suitable for a wide range of vegetable crops. In addition, the remaining fruit pulp can be repurposed as animal feed. The project is scheduled to commence in mid-2026 in Kampong Thom province and will be led by Dr. Elen Morm.

The third initiative centers on generating electricity from cashew nut shells. ITC researchers are currently assessing and comparing the benefits of extracting oil from cashew shells versus using them directly for power generation. This project aims to identify the most efficient and sustainable use of cashew shell waste and is set to begin in mid-2026 in Kampong Thom province under the leadership of Dr. Or Chanmoly.

Together, the three proposed projects highlight the growing efforts of CAC and ITC to promote innovation, sustainability, and value addition in Cambodia’s cashew industry, while reducing waste and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
