Border Tensions Derail Cambodian SMEs’ Plans to Attend ESG Training in Thailand, Local Program Offered Instead
Phnom Penh, October 1, 2025 — The Cashew nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) has announced a shift in its efforts to support local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in adopting sustainable business practices following rising border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
The CAC had previously encouraged its members to enroll in a specialized training course on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices organized by the Mekong Institute (MI) at Khon Kaen University in Thailand. However, the escalation of border clashes in late July 2025, coupled with reports of harassment by Thai authorities at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, has led to a wave of cancellations by Cambodian participants.
“Many of our SME members reported being subjected to undue scrutiny at the airport, and some were even detained,” a CAC representative said. “Given the current climate, it’s simply not safe for Cambodians to travel to Thailand for training.”
In response to the situation, CAC is now urging its members to take part in the same training program, which will be offered locally in Cambodia from November 12 to 14, 2025.
The course is part of the Mekong Sustainable Supply Chains Transformation and Advancement Project, funded by AMEICC/AOTS and implemented by the Mekong Institute. Running from September 2024 to August 2026, the project aims to help SMEs in the automotive, agriculture/food processing, and textile sectors across the Mekong region adopt ESG practices and decarbonization strategies.
The ASEAN-Japan Economic Co-Creation Vision highlights ESG integration as a key driver for SME competitiveness and long-term sustainability. Yet, many small businesses still lack the tools and understanding necessary to implement such measures effectively.
